Potential clients often comment to her while on the phone “I really like how outdoor portraits look, can we shoot outside?”
Here’s Kristina’s take on the difference between doing a studio vs outdoor headshot session:
Well-crafted business headshots exude professionalism, and succeed in visually enhancing an individual's personal brand. Because of this, studio headshot sessions are Kristina’s preferred choice over outdoor shoots due to their controlled environment, allowing for her to focus on every detail, perfect lighting, and composition.
Usually people mention liking outdoor headshot lighting because of the soft way outdoor light hits their face. To experienced photographers, this concept is called light diffusion. It happens when the sun is usually behind soft clouds, and the sun usually bounces off all surfaces and shines it back onto the face from different directions. Sadly, most beginner headshot photographers only use one light to illuminate their subjects. When you light a face with only one light source, you create tons of unsightly shadows anywhere there is a fold or edge on your face (for example smile lines). But when you’ve been obsessing about how to light faces for 20 years, it’s just not a concern Kristina’s studio headshot clients need to worry about. She typically will use 4 to 5 lights in her lighting setups, meticulously measuring the light output of each one to softly shape the light around the face.
Shooting headshots outside causes a string of variables that Kristina would rather avoid. Like wind blowing hair out of place, and cold temperatures causing pink noses and ears. Not to mention allergies, the sun peeking in and out behind clouds… wind blowing clothing… These are all things your headshot photographer is trying to avoid.
Luckily - Kristina knows how to evenly light a face to give the illusion of natural light headshots, but getting the consistency of shooting with studio headshot lighting. This is why, unless explicitly required by the client, Kristina usually prefers to shoot in her Bethesda photo studio.
If your business or company requires outdoor headshots, thats not a problem at all. Kristina shot outdoor headshots for over a decade and still teaches this skill to new photographers yearly at photo conferences around the US. So whichever type of corporate headshot style you are looking for, you’re guaranteed to receive it or your money back!

Studio Portrait Photography Tips
Preparing for your portrait session at a portrait studio is crucial to ensure that you portray the best version of yourself. When it comes to wardrobe, opt for classic and timeless pieces that align with your industry and personal brand. But also make sure you feel good and confident in them. Solid colors work well, as they are less distracting and keep the focus on your face along with v shaped neckline cuts to help elongate necks and create visual leading lines in the headshot. Avoid busy patterns or large logos that might divert attention. Make sure your clothing fits well and is wrinkle-free to project a polished image. Kristina keeps a steamer on hand just in case your clothing gets wrinkled in transit to the studio. In terms of makeup, aim for a natural and well-groomed look, accentuating your features without going overboard. The goal is to look like yourself, but the most polished, ‘put-together’ version, which when a photographer is using studio lighting, a heavier makeup coverage and slightly more contrast is encouraged. Consider hiring Kristina’s professional hair and makeup artist if you're unsure about what suits you best.
